Gowanus is a place that inspires fascination and aspiration. One of New York's oldest and most unique regions, Gowanus began as one of New York's great natural estuaries (once famous for oysters the size of dinner plates!).

Today, Gowanus bears the legacy of having become one of New York's most active industrial waterways, and unfortunately, one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States. The region contains some of the most unusual infrastructure anywhere in New York City, as well as a diversity of building types and uses that are unparalleled. The Gowanus community mirrors the region itself in its diversity, passion and the aspirations of its many members.

The Gowanus Canal Community Development Corporation has been one of the longest standing advocates of a progressive vision for the future of Gowanus. We are a champion for better quality housing, education and economic growth as well as a think tank and gadfly to foster innovation and a more complete notion of what a sustainable Gowanus truly might look like. We see it as our goal to represent the diversity of talents, ingenuity and culture that exists within our area and help to bring it to light in new and exciting ways.

Our organization is only as strong as the support of our members and we strongly encourage any members of the Gowanus community AND those from beyond who are drawn to its past and its future to get involved and help us pursue dynamic and exciting projects that support the community and present a model from which others can learn.
